Unhitched trailer injures motorcyclist

Saturday accident closes most of Highway 30 near St. Helens

A boat trailer that came unhitched from a vehicle seriously injured a motorcyclist near St. Helens on Saturday afternoon.

According to the Oregon State Police, at approximately 1:42 p.m. on June 2, a southbound vehicle was towing a boat trailer on Highway 30 near Bennett Road when the trailer came loose and drifted across all lanes of traffic, colliding with a northbound motorcycle.

The driver of the motorcycle,Lynn Mohler, 54, from Ilwaco, Washington, was seriously injured. He was transported by Columbia River Fire and Rescue paramedics to Legacy Emanuel Hospital.

The driver of the vehicle towing the trailer, Ricky Rupp, 51, from Warren, was cited for Violating Towing Safety Requirements.

Three of four highway lanes were blocked while the crash was by OSP trooper from St. Helens investigated for about one hour. They were assisted by the Oregon Department of Transportation, Columbia River Fire and Rescue and the Columbia County Sheriff's Office.
