HINGHAM —

A 94-year-old Hingham man who was hit by a runaway trailer on Friday afternoon is recovering, police say.

William C. Thomas of Fresh River Avenue was walking on a sidewalk near the intersection of Fresh River Avenue and Fort Hill Street when a lawnmower trailer being illegally towed behind a Nissan Pathfinder came loose and struck him from behind, according to police.

The plastic trailer, intended for pulling by a riding lawnmower, “knocked him into the air,” police Lt. Michael Peraino said.

Several people called 911 after seeing the accident. Thomas was taken to South Shore Hospital by the Hingham Fire Department.

He has returned home, Peraino said.

Although Peraino said the accident is still being investigated, police were planning to file charges against the Pathfinder driver today in Hingham District Court.

The driver was to be charged with operating a vehicle with a revoked license, operating a motor vehicle negligently to endanger, operating an unregistered vehicle (the trailer), and operating a motor vehicle with an expired inspection sticker, police said.
