OCEAN CITY – A trailer detached from a truck traveling on Route 52 Saturday and crossed into oncoming traffic.
The bridge was closed for less than 30 minutes because of the accident. Traffic backed up into Ocean City and Somers Point for a short time.
Police said a landscaping trailer came unhitched from a truck traveling west on the causeway, which will be replaced in coming years. The trailer crossed into the southbound lanes and hit the car of Lynn Matthews, a resident of Egg Harbor Township, on the driver’s side and shattering the window.
Three people occupied the car. They were all transported to Shore Memorial Hospital with minor injures.
The driver of the truck, Walter Kasparites, was not injured in the accident. The trailer and the car were towed from the scene before the causeway was reopened to traffic.
Earlier this month a three-car accident also closed the causeway for a short period of time.
No traffic pattern changes are expected on the causeway. State Department of Transportation officials have said all four lanes will be opened by Memorial Day weekend and remain open for the summer, hopefully cutting down on delays and accidents.
