3 young bulls run wild after wreck in Decatur

Associated Press - June 27, 2008 3:14 PM ET

DECATUR, Ala. (AP) - Three young bulls were on the run through a quiet Decatur neighborhood after escaping from a wrecked trailer.

They rambled down streets, clomped over flowers and grazed a bit before they were caught Thursday.

The bulls got loose when a trailer carrying cattle to auction came unhitched and the gate was jarred open.

More than a dozen people, including police, tried to corral the bulls with little success at first. The bulls eventually were cornered and herded into an empty trailer.

Two people are confirmed dead in a traffic accident that leaves a stretch of Alabama Highway 77 South of Ohatchee blocked.

The wreck occurred this morning. The Etowah County Sheriff's Department dive team was called to assist the Ohatchee Police Department in searching for victims. The bodies of a male driver and female passenger were pulled from the water.

Officials would not relate any details about the victims other than to say they were from "north of" Ohatchee.

Reports from the scene indicate the victims were in an 18-wheeler pulling an empty box trailer. A utility trailer either came loose from the pickup towing it or went out of control, and reports said the driver of the 18-wheeler swerved to avoid the trailer and ran off into the water.

It was unclear if the victims were killed in the wreck or drowned.

Trailer breaks loose, kills eastbound motorist

Trailer breaks loose, kills eastbound motorist

-- An eastbound motorist died this afternoon after her vehicle was hit head-on by a trailer that had come loose from a truck and crossed the Interstate 10 median, Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesman Johnny Poulos said.

Poulos said the female driver's name would be released pending notification of next of kin.

The accident happened after a trailer broke loose from a westbound Ford F-150, and the trailer crossed the median, hitting the woman's Toyota in the eastbound lanes of I-10 at the Alabama state line.

Poulos said the truck's driver was not injured and did stop on the shoulder of the westbound lane of the interstate when the trailer broke loose.

The Sun Herald will update this story as details become available.

Interstate 90 East near the River Road overpass in Willoughby Hills was shut down for about 1 1/2 hours this morning after a two-vehicle accident, which injured a mother and daughter, according to police.

The vicims were taken by a LifeFlight helicopter to MetroHealth Medical Center, where their conditions were not immediately known.

Police said the accident occurred around 8:20 a.m. when the driver of a Chevrolet Trailblazer towing a camper trailer tried to change from the center to the right lane.

A Cadillac was already in the right lane and the driver of the Trailblazer overcorrected and lost control, overturning the rig, police said.

The Trailblazer's driver, whose daughter and wife are being treated at MetroHealth, was not injured. The occupants of the Cadillac also were not hurt.

TREASURE VALLEY — A pair of late-afternoon wrecks injured at least one person and caused major headaches Monday for thousands of I-84 motorists.

In the first reported accident, police said Joshua Yellon, 21 of Kuna, was traveling east on I-84 in a white 2000 Ford F-250 Pickup near exit 37 and the 11th Avenue North Overpass in Nampa. Authorities said it was then that Yellon’s flatbed trailer came off of his vehicle and traveled through the median and struck the semi trailer of Tomasz Rutkowski, 29, of Greenwood Village, Colorado. Rutkowski was traveling west. Police said both men were wearing seat belts and escaped injury

The Canyon County Sheriff’s Office and Nampa Police Department assisted Idaho State Police on the crash, which shut down all westbound lanes and one lane of eastbound traffic.

Shortly after, a second crash — this time in the eastbound lanes of I-84 under the Cole/Overland overpass at milepost 50 in Boise — closed three lanes of the interstate as police investigated the wreck. One unidentified victim was transported to Saint Alphonsus Medical Center with injuries. Additional details were unavailable late Monday.

Runaway cement mixer causes smash

Runaway cement mixer causes smash

A pregnant woman, an elderly couple and three netball players escaped serious injury when a runaway cement mixer skidded across a busy road causing mayhem.

The machinery flew off the back of a trailer, which had been approaching the A420 from the Bampton direction near Buckland, and collided with a car on Wednesday night.

A blue Land Rover seen pulling the trailer failed to stop at the scene.

Last night police confirmed they were hunting the driver and issued an appeal for witnesses.

Miraculously, no one suffered serious injuries in the smash on the busy Oxford to Swindon road.

Marlene Snow, 65, from Bampton, was driving along the A420 with friends Andrea Wellington, from Faringdon, and Katie Clarke, from Carswell Marsh, when the mixer smashed into the front of her Nissan X-Trail.

The friends, who are all members of Shrivenham Netball Club, were travelling to a match in Banbury.

Mrs Snow said she was no more than 20 metres from the junction when she spotted the mixer.

She said: "It flew like a bobsleigh. It clipped the front of the car and pulled me towards the middle of the road where vehicles were ready to turn to Bampton.

"I tried to pull back to the correct side of the road, but I hit an elderly couple's car.

"I didn't know at the time it was a cement mixer, I just saw an orange rusty shape hurtling across the road.

"It could have been so much worse. If it had hit the side of my car, it would have probably killed my friend."

The mixer came to rest in front of a blue VW Golf driven by heavily pregnant woman Victoria Pattison.

Ms Wellington, who suffered whiplash, was forced to take the day off work yesterday.

She said: "I was in the back. I saw the mixer coming at such a speed - it was really going fast. I closed my eyes. I knew we were going to hit something.

The Nissan struck a Toyota Yaris driven by pensioner Harry Benford, 82, from Kennington, who was taking wife Eunice out for dinner to celebrate her 82nd birthday.

He said: "Sparks flew and a mixer came careering across the road - my wife was left very shaken."

Ms Pattison, from Watchfield, said she felt lucky not to have been hit by the mixer.

She urged police to track down the driver of the Land Rover who failed to stop.

She said: "I was fine - I was more worried about the elderly couple.

"I can't believe the driver failed to stop."

Two near misses on Route 7 LOOSE TRAILER

Two near misses on Route 7

Monday, 16 June 2008 10:43

Police recently responded to two cases of near misses on Route 7, in which, according to Capt. Michael Lombardo, it was a matter of luck that no one was injured.

On Tuesday, June 3, at around 3:30 p.m., a boat and trailer came loose from a truck heading north on Route 7 just past Wilton town hall.

The boat and trailer drifted across the double yellow line and came to a halt in the southbound lane without causing damage or injury, police said.

On Thursday, June 5, at 9:35 a.m., an oil delivery truck making a stop on Danbury Road near Zion’s Hill Church rolled across Route 7 and over an embankment.

According to police, the driver of the truck had just removed the blocks from behind the tires and had stepped onto the running board, releasing one of two braking mechanisms of the truck. The truck began to roll down the driveway, throwing the driver off the vehicle, and then across Route 7 in a construction zone before rolling down an embankment and coming to rest against a tree. A large tow truck was used to remove the oil delivery truck. The driver of the truck was given a written warning for unsafe movement of a motor vehicle, police said.

Unhitched trailer hits truck

Unhitched trailer hits truck
COLLISION: A family watches as their belongings and summer home are damaged
By JENNI DUNNING

A London woman watched helplessly as the trailer holding all her belongings smashed into the side of a transport truck yesterday.

No one was injured, but her belongings and the camper trailer were damaged.

"I was just praying to God that the (driver) wouldn't get hurt and there wouldn't be an explosion," said Amy Fitzsimmons, 31.

The eight-metre trailer was being hauled by her father when it popped off its hitch while going over railway tracks, she said.

The trailer then veered to the left, into the cab of a transport truck exiting the driveway of a business, she said.

"It was a freak accident. It happened in a matter of seconds (and) before you know, it was all over," she said.

The incident happened about 3 p.m. on Plover Mills Road near Bryanston, where Fitzsimmons was heading.

The trailer was later towed so she could retrieve salvageable items inside.

Fitzsimmons and her children, Gracie, 3, and Riley, 8, recently left their London apartment and were driving to Bryanston to live on a campground to save money on housing during the summer.

"My son's a bit shaken up" after seeing their belongings damaged, she said. "They knew the plan to give up our apartment."

Fitzsimmons said they were excited about the move and had just bought a new compact fridge.

She said she's just happy that everyone is safe. "I've already gone through the worst of it. Now it's just figuring out the next step."

Trailer hauling car separates from pickup, leaves road, hits trees

A race car in its trailer separated from its pickup truck this afternoon on Interstate 78 and left the road, delaying traffic in both directions for a time, police said.

At about 4:29 p.m., a pickup truck pulling a race car in a trailer was heading eastbound on I-78, west of Exit 20, when the trailer separated from the truck, left the roadway off the right shoulder and overturned, hitting a number of trees as it went, according to state police at the Perryville barracks.

Police said the right shoulder of I-78 west of Exit 20 is closed while waiting for the vehicles to be picked up by a tow truck. No injuries or violations were reported by police, and no further information on the driver was available.

The New Jersey Department of Transportation reports delays due to rubbernecking and volume on I-78 westbound.

Fulton drivers suffered several series of automobile accidents during the past week, resulting in one fatality and several injuries.

A two-car accident on May 27 resulted in the death of 37-year-old Fulton resident Madonna Lynn Oliver. The accident occurred at approximately 1 p.m. on Dorsey-Evergreen Road, about two miles south of Old Highway 78, when Oliver’s vehicle collided head-on with an SUV traveling in the other lane.

According to Itawamba County Sheriff Chris Dickinson, heavy rain could have contributed to the accident with slick roadways and low visibility causing Oliver to veer into oncoming traffic.

“The witnesses with whom we talked said that she appeared to lose control of her vehicle and then swerve into the other lane,” Dickinson explained.

He added that the other driver involved in the accident was taken to the North Mississippi Medical Center for serious, but not life-threatening, injuries.

**Trailer collision**

Two Fulton residents were injured in a second accident which occurred on May 28 when a trailer filled with lumber came loose from its hitch and collided with an oncoming vehicle.

According to Fulton police, while traveling west on Main Street, Brandie M. Powers and Donna Beam were both injured and taken to the North Mississippi Medical Center after Powers’ vehicle collided into the rear end of a runaway trailer filled with lumber. Anthony Wilson, also of Fulton, was hauling the trailer with his pickup truck when it came off the truck’s hitch and collided with Powers’ vehicle.

Police added that both the truck’s bell and hitch were in good shape, and the trailer slipped off of the hitch rather than broke free.

Both Powers and Beam have been released from the hospital. A third passenger, Isabella Powers, was riding in the backseat of the car when the accident took place but was uninjured.

**Motorcycle accident**

A motorcyclist was seriously injured after his vehicle collided with a car on Monday morning.

According to Fulton police, the unnamed motorcyclist hit a second vehicle while traveling west on Main Street. He was flown to the North Mississippi Medical Center for treatment of severe injuries as a result of the collision.

The driver of the second vehicle, 21-year-old Fulton resident Rachel Block, accidentally collided with the motorist while turning off of East Main Street onto Montgomery Street. Police claim she accidentally hit the motorcyclist while passing across the westbound lane. Block was uninjured.
