Man killed after outrigger canoe detaches, strikes SUV

A 49-year-old man died yesterday from injuries received when a six-man outrigger canoe on a trailer broke loose from the car that was towing it and hit his sports utility vehicle, Big Island firefighters say.

The accident happened on Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway about 8:47 a.m.

Big Island police said the driver of the SUV suffered "significant head injuries" when the outrigger "struck and penetrated" his vehicle.

He was initially listed in critical condition, but was later pronounced dead at Kona Community Hospital.

Five people in the car that was towing the canoe were uninjured, but were taken to the hospital for observation.
