Washigton State Patrol Warns: Check Your Trailer Before You Tow It

NOTE: Warnings are not working.

It's about time we address this on a National Level

With the hot weather and Seafair weekend approaching, the Washington State Patrol would like to remind motorists to conduct a complete and thorough safety check of all trailers and campers prior to towing them on the roadway.

Safety checks should consist of checking tires for any abnormal wear and cracks, making sure the tire pressure meets the manufacturers recommended PSI for the load, checking that the lug nuts are properly tightened, the safety chains and emergency brake are properly attached, all tail lights are operative, and the load is properly secured.

This reminder comes after a wheel came loose from a boat trailer at approximately 12:40 am on July 25th. The boat trailer was being towed in the southbound lanes of I-5 at 304th St in Federal Way when the right wheel came loose. The wheel hit a semi truck and shot across the median and landed on top of a passenger car in the northbound lanes. The impact was so extreme that it crushed the roof of the car forcing it into the passenger compartment. The female driver, a Pennsylvania resident and sole occupant, was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
