Unhitched trailer hits truck
COLLISION: A family watches as their belongings and summer home are damaged

A London woman watched helplessly as the trailer holding all her belongings smashed into the side of a transport truck yesterday.

No one was injured, but her belongings and the camper trailer were damaged.

"I was just praying to God that the (driver) wouldn't get hurt and there wouldn't be an explosion," said Amy Fitzsimmons, 31.

The eight-metre trailer was being hauled by her father when it popped off its hitch while going over railway tracks, she said.

The trailer then veered to the left, into the cab of a transport truck exiting the driveway of a business, she said.

"It was a freak accident. It happened in a matter of seconds (and) before you know, it was all over," she said.

The incident happened about 3 p.m. on Plover Mills Road near Bryanston, where Fitzsimmons was heading.

The trailer was later towed so she could retrieve salvageable items inside.

Fitzsimmons and her children, Gracie, 3, and Riley, 8, recently left their London apartment and were driving to Bryanston to live on a campground to save money on housing during the summer.

"My son's a bit shaken up" after seeing their belongings damaged, she said. "They knew the plan to give up our apartment."

Fitzsimmons said they were excited about the move and had just bought a new compact fridge.

She said she's just happy that everyone is safe. "I've already gone through the worst of it. Now it's just figuring out the next step."
