Fulton drivers suffered several series of automobile accidents during the past week, resulting in one fatality and several injuries.
A two-car accident on May 27 resulted in the death of 37-year-old Fulton resident Madonna Lynn Oliver. The accident occurred at approximately 1 p.m. on Dorsey-Evergreen Road, about two miles south of Old Highway 78, when Oliver’s vehicle collided head-on with an SUV traveling in the other lane.
According to Itawamba County Sheriff Chris Dickinson, heavy rain could have contributed to the accident with slick roadways and low visibility causing Oliver to veer into oncoming traffic.
“The witnesses with whom we talked said that she appeared to lose control of her vehicle and then swerve into the other lane,” Dickinson explained.
He added that the other driver involved in the accident was taken to the North Mississippi Medical Center for serious, but not life-threatening, injuries.
**Trailer collision**
Two Fulton residents were injured in a second accident which occurred on May 28 when a trailer filled with lumber came loose from its hitch and collided with an oncoming vehicle.
According to Fulton police, while traveling west on Main Street, Brandie M. Powers and Donna Beam were both injured and taken to the North Mississippi Medical Center after Powers’ vehicle collided into the rear end of a runaway trailer filled with lumber. Anthony Wilson, also of Fulton, was hauling the trailer with his pickup truck when it came off the truck’s hitch and collided with Powers’ vehicle.
Police added that both the truck’s bell and hitch were in good shape, and the trailer slipped off of the hitch rather than broke free.
Both Powers and Beam have been released from the hospital. A third passenger, Isabella Powers, was riding in the backseat of the car when the accident took place but was uninjured.
**Motorcycle accident**
A motorcyclist was seriously injured after his vehicle collided with a car on Monday morning.
According to Fulton police, the unnamed motorcyclist hit a second vehicle while traveling west on Main Street. He was flown to the North Mississippi Medical Center for treatment of severe injuries as a result of the collision.
The driver of the second vehicle, 21-year-old Fulton resident Rachel Block, accidentally collided with the motorist while turning off of East Main Street onto Montgomery Street. Police claim she accidentally hit the motorcyclist while passing across the westbound lane. Block was uninjured.
