Nov. 28--NEWPORT NEWS -- A boat came loose from a trailer and collided with three cars at a busy Newport News intersection late Monday night. No one was injured.

A pickup truck pulling a white 19-foot motorboat was crossing Jefferson Avenue on Oyster Point Road, heading west, when the trailer came unhinged and sent the boat sailing into a line of facing cars waiting to turn left onto Jefferson.

The accident happened just before 9 p.m. and snarled traffic at the crossing of Newport News' most dangerous intersection.

The boat hit the side of an unmarked Virginia State Police car, then bounced on top of Tom Sobkowicz's car, shattering the rear windshield and showering glass into the back seat, where Sobkowicz's 5-year-old son was sleeping.

"It just popped off and came toward us," said Sobkowicz, who lives in Newport News. His son was unharmed.

Selena Stellute Glenn, 29, of Williamsburg, was waiting at the light to turn toward her home when she saw the boat bouncing toward her. It came to rest on the hood of her Ford Expedition, its bow just inches from the windshield.

"It was like slow motion," Glenn said. "It was unbelievable."

Virginia State Police were investigating the crash because a state police car was involved.

A state trooper declined to comment on the accident.

Witnesses said the driver pulling the boat was not speeding or driving erratically. He had just bought the new boat and was bringing it home, he said.

DERWOOD, Md. (AP) -- A trailer carrying a tractor broke loose from a farm truck and crashed into a school bus Friday, killing the bus driver and injuring four children, police said.

Three children were airlifted by helicopter to Children's Hospital in Washington and another child was taken away by ambulance, according to Montgomery County Police spokesman Derek Baliles.

A spokesman for Children's Hospital said a 5-year-old girl was listed in critical condition and a 5-year-old girl and 11-year-old girl were in serious condition. The condition of the fourth injured child was not immediately known.

The rest of the approximately 30 young children who had been traveling home from school on the bus were being transported to another hospital to be checked for minor injuries and reunited with their parents.

Baliles said the driver of a farm truck carrying a tractor on a trailer lost control. The trailer separated from the truck and crashed int o the front of the school bus. The farm truck driver was also sent to a hospital with minor injuries.

The school bus driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Derwood is near Rockville, about 20 miles north of downtown Washington.

Jun. 9--BEAUFORT -- A Carteret County woman was killed and two of her family members injured Thursday after a utility trailer carrying lumber came loose and struck their vehicle. Lilly Lawrence Nelson, 70, of the Gloucester community, died at the scene of the fatal collision that occurred on U.S. 70 near East Carteret High School in Beaufort, said Trooper Marvin Shadday of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Nelson was the front passenger in a car driven by her daughter, Lori Lawrence Merkley, 35, also of Gloucester. Her granddaughter, 13-year-old Raina Merkley, was a passenger in the right back seat.

Lori Merkley was transported to Carteret General Hospital in Morehead City for treatment of injuries, and Raina Merkley was flown by East Care to Pitt County Memorial in Greenville, where she was in stable condition, Shadday said.

The family was traveling in a 2005 Suzuki west on U.S. 70 when a utility trailer being towed by a pick-up truck traveling in the opposite direction separated from the truck and crossed the center line of the highway, Shadday said.

The utility trailer, which was carrying a load of lumber, struck the car head on. The lumber was thrown onto the car and several pieces went through the windshield, Shadday said. The worst of the impact was on the passenger side of the vehicle where Nelson was sitting, he said. Also injured in the collision was Alene Price Gillikin, 64, of Marshallberg. Gillikin was traveling behind Merkley in a 1997 station wagon and struck the rear end of the car. She was transported to Carteret General Hospital, the Highway Patrol said. The pickup truck, driven by Jordan Erik Swicegood, 26, of Beaufort, was not hit. The investigation of the collision and how the trailer became separated is ongoing and no charges had been filed Thursday, Shadday said. Ridgway man killed in rollover

A Ridgway man was killed Tuesday in a one-car accident at the Dallas Divide.

Brian Peters, 54, was driving a silver 2002 Toyota Tundra that was pulling a trailer just after noon Tuesday on westbound Colorado 62 at mile marker 11, the Colorado State Patrol said in a news release. He veered off the north side of the road, overcorrected and went into the eastbound lanes. The truck rolled, and the trailer came loose.

Peters, who was wearing a seat belt, was killed.

His passenger, a 73-year-old woman from Dearborn, Mich., was taken to St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction with moderate injuries, the patrol said.

A pickup truck towing another vehicle on a trailer drifted into the guardrail on southbound Highway 97 near Sunriver Wednesday evening and it jackknifed, blocking traffic through the evening commute.

The 1984 Dodge pickup truck and 20-foot trailer crashed shortly after 5:30 p.m. near the Cottonwood Road exit, south of Lava Butte, said Deschutes County sheriff's Sgt. Joe DeLuca.

Driver Henry Root, 69, of Gilchrist, was unhurt, but his towed vehicle had substantial damage - and he got a ticket for failure to maintain his lane of travel, said DeLuca said.

Arriving deputies found the accident blocking the highway's southbound lane.

The crash blocked both lanes of Highway 97 for nearly 90 minutes - causing a miles-long rush hour backup - while recovery vehicles cleared the scene, aided by sheriff's deputies and the Oregon Department of Transportation.

An accident on Dallas Divide on state Highway 62 west of Ridgway claimed the life of Ridgway resident Brian Peters, 54, at 12:10 p.m. Tuesday. Peters was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:30 p.m., according to the Colorado State Patrol.

His passenger, Marlene Zerger, 74, of Dearborn, Mich., suffered moderate injuries and was airlifted to St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction.

According to the State Patrol report, Peters was driving westbound in a 2002 Toyota pickup and towing a trailer when they went off the north side of the highway. He apparently overcorrected, came back on the roadway, then rolled 2 1/2 times.

Both Peters and Zerger were wearing seat belts. Neither was ejected during the crash.

BOISE - Steven Thompson loved to run.

His personal best in the mile was just over four and a half minutes. But it wasn't good enough - he wanted to be that much better.

"He was just a junior and he had a lot of goals this year," said Steven's mother, Gina. "He liked to work hard."

Steven, 17, was killed in a horrific traffic accident Tuesday on Highway 55.

He was headed to a cross country camp when a truck pulling a trailer lost control and smashed into the car he was riding in. The impact killed Steven and sent five others to the hospital - including two of his classmates and Centennial High School's assistant cross country coach Glenn Mabey.

"I saw him the morning of the crash and he was running around in his funny shades, hanging out having a good time," said Jordan Leisure, a friend of Thompson. "That's the last image I'm going to have of him and it's a really good last image."

His mother, fighting back tears, said it was hard recalling all the delightful things about her son. There were just too many to remember.

"He was an incredible kid," she said. "I wish I could tell you all the wonderful stories."

Idaho State Police identified Ryan Howard, 38, of Texas, as the driver who caused the accident. Howard was driving a Dodge Durango pulling a trailer when police said he lost control and jackknifed.

He smashed into a Subaru, killing Thompson and also ran into a van. Five people, including Howard and two other teens were taken to the hospital. Maybey is still in critical condition. Austin Stalling is in fair condition while Michael Dobkins was treated and released.

On Tuesday, friends at Centennial paused to remember their fallen friend. A profile page was also made on Facebook entitled "In Loving Memory of Steven Thompson."

"What an inspiration to all of us," said Tyler, who wrote on the page. "We love you, bro."

"It makes you just want to help people around you who are feeling really sad and really down and you really want to help them out, it's just a real shame," Leisure said.

On Thursday, the family of Stalling issued a statement.

"We would like to thank the entire community, and especially the track and cross country teams from Centennial, Eagle, and all the area high schools for your prayers and support."

"Austin continues to recover and improve daily, and we are so grateful to the excellent care he's receiving at Saint Alphonsus. We ask for your continuing support of all four families involved in this tragedy."

Steven's mother said she doesn't know what she's going to do next. The pain of losing her son is so new.

"I'm really going to miss him," she said. "I can't even imagine how hard it's going to be."

A memorial fund for Steven Thompson and a donation account for Coach Glenn Mabey have been set up at Capital Educators Credit Union.
